Pool Deck Resurfacing

Has years of fun in the sun taken its toll on your backyard pool? Whether it’s the sun, chlorine and other chemicals, or just general wear and tear, there will come a time when you’ll have to consider replacing the elements of your pool and deck.

While there are many options out there, we’ve found that instead of ripping up all the bad concrete and completely starting over, resurfacing provides a way to keep the design you initially loved while restoring it to its former glory. You don’t even have to stop there as when It comes to refinishing the pool deck, the sky’s the limit!

Creating a Distinct Decorative Pool Deck

Resurfacing a deck doesn’t always have to be purely about function, it can also be about style! When applying a pool deck coating, especially with epoxy, then you can really dive in and customize it just the way you like.

Our team offers a number of design choices for epoxy including solid coatings that provide protection and a custom color, epoxy chips for a one of a kind look, and even marble epoxy that gives that classic two toned look without the high cost often associated with it.

Just reach out and let us know what your vision is and we can work with you to make it a reality! As mentioned, a great look can be easily accomplished with resurfacing but luckily, you won’t have to sacrifice protection.

Why Choose Epoxy?

The Benefits of Pool Deck Coating

One thing we know about pool decks is that if they get slippery, all bets are off. Pool deck coating adds longevity to your existing concrete deck as well as the option for so much more! We offer a suite of additional coating options that include extra non-slip materials, sun (UV ray) protection, and even stain resistance.

Outside of these benefits, the coating of a concrete pool deck help increase its already long lifespan another 10 – 20 years if properly maintained. Yes, coating does wear out overtime but our team is trained on how to strip and reapply when you need it so you’ll be able to enjoy its benefits year round.

Another major benefit of pool deck coating is its cost savings. Removing, installing, and possibly rebuilding a concrete pool deck costs quite a bit, especially when compared to the costs of resurfacing. What’s more, resurfacing ADDS to concrete’s lifetime meaning that eventual replacement is pushed back years at a time after every coating is applied.

As an epoxy focused company, we highly recommend going with an epoxy coating for your pool deck as it goes above and beyond when it comes to both design and beauty!

Upgrading to an Epoxy Pool Deck

The term epoxy pool deck primarily refers to epoxy layers applied over concrete. Epoxy made by combining two chemicals that harden together to create a material that is highly resistant, durable, and non-toxic. Those are all a must for a pool deck but it doesn’t stop there! Epoxy pool decks also:

  • Have natural resistance to harsh chemicals

  • Have resistance to spills and moisture

  • Have high durability to impact as well as regular foot traffic

  • Can be treated to be anti-slip making everything safer

Another great benefit of epoxy that can’t be ignored is its easy maintenance! Non-coated or epoxy pool decks (such as wood or plain concrete) will discolor, warp, or stain which are all difficult to restore. This usually leads to needing a pool deck repair to get it back to its original state. Epoxy’s resistances to staining and spills however make it a breeze to clean up – even that slimy stuff that usually forms on the outside!

It really is a great choice for pool decking but if you’re not quite ready to make that plunge, a sealer will suit your needs until you’re ready.

What Pool Deck Sealer Actually Does

Pool deck sealer is essential to adding protection against the elements whether your pool is indoors or out. Sealers comes in a variety of options but primarily are either a topical or penetrating sealer.

Topical sealers are applied by first cleaning and preparing the existing concrete then applying the sealer over it in a number of layers. Once the sealer dries, it then provides a strong pool deck coating that will prevent damage to the concrete underneath and prevent any outside forces for making it in. This increases durability and its overall livelihood.

Penetrating sealer on the other hand is used in a similar way but has a different effect from topical sealer. A penetrating sealer will seep into the existing concrete and “gate off” the pores of the material from outside forces. This prevents moisture or other harsh chemicals from getting embedded in between the concrete and causing structural damage.

While these can be used in tandem, we don’t recommend trying to apply them yourself. Mistakes like adding too much sealer can ruin an otherwise perfect pool deck so instead, give us a call so we can take care of you!

Do you Need Pool Deck Refinishing?

Treated concrete pools and their decks tend to need refinishing once every 10 years depending on the level of maintenance they are given. Untreated pool decks however need to be repaired and deep cleaned every three years or less. This is due to both sanitation and the effects of chemicals and the sun on the untreated material.

If you’ve noticed any of the following issues, you should seriously consider refinishing your pool deck:

  • Cracks, flakes, or holes in concrete

  • Major discoloration or bleaching of the surface

  • Slimy texture that will not go away even after washing

While any breaks in the concrete may require a small pool deck repair before refinishing, once it’s done, you’ll thank yourself for investing in it!

FAQ's

Epoxy coating is a great option for all of these areas! Garages in particular benefit from epoxy’s resilience to chemicals such as gasoline and motor oil. Even better, you can clean these up super quickly thanks to the seal applied to all our epoxy floor installations.

While the initial investment for epoxy flooring definitely varies by the amount of square footage needing to be coated, our customers have all found that the long term benefits all offset this initial cost. To directly answer your question, epoxy flooring is generally not very expensive short term and when weighing its long term benefits is well worth the money.

Of course! Every building material on the market has both pros and cons to its use. While we have demonstrated its pros, a few of the issues we’ve heard from customers are that the floor gets a lot colder in the winter due to its heat resistant nature, walking on epoxy can be a little louder due to its high level of hardness, and if not treated for it, epoxy flooring can have issues with UV radiation.

If any of these are a concern for you, please don’t hesitate to give us a call and we can discuss it with you.
