EXPERT EPOXY FLOORING

Epoxy Flooring

Epoxy flooring is a popular choice amongst both business and home owners due to its many benefits including its durability, ease of maintenance, and resistance to corrosion. One of epoxy floor coating’s more often overlooked quality though are its great looks due to the many types of epoxy out there. It really is a great material if you’re looking to upgrade your existing concrete flooring or just looking to change its look.

Oh! We should probably talk a little bit about what epoxy even is…

What is Epoxy?

If you work with wood or are a model train hobbyist, you’ve probably heard the term epoxy on quite a few occasions. This is due to its various applications such as an adhesive, crack repairer, gap filler, and even a coating agent!

This wide level of usage is all thanks to epoxy’s rather unique chemical makeup. While we won’t go too deep down the science hole, epoxy generally refers to both the parts that are combined to make it and the end product as well. Typically the parts that start this process are referred to as Part A and Part B.

Part A is liquid epoxy. Liquid epoxy has a lot going on under the surface but just think of it as a large group of molecules jostling for position with plenty of positive and negative charges to go around. This jostling however makes it a more flexible material that is ready for a chemical reaction to change its properties. That’s where part B comes in.

Part B is the hardener. When it’s introduced to liquid epoxy, the material that was “ready to pop” explodes and then bonds with Part B’s molecules to create long molecule chains called polymers. This happens over and over again which creates the hardened epoxy that has a lot of strength due to the large amount of polymers all sitting under the surface.

This strength is essential to epoxy floor coating and where a number of its awesome benefits come from. Enough teasing though, let’s dive in to what’s great about epoxy for flooring!

Why Choose Epoxy?

The Many Benefits of Epoxy for Flooring

Durability

Epoxy coating is known to be resistant to cracks, chemicals, staining, scratches, fire, and even heavy machinery! Also, as any epoxy flooring company will tell you, it extends the life of your pre-existing concrete floor by a few years to decades depending on the amount of daily foot and vehicle traffic.

Easy to Clean

Compared to the alternatives, epoxy flooring is especially easy to clean and maintain. As it is also water resistant, cleaning up any spills is far easier and quicker since none of the liquid will seep in. Regular sweeping may be needed but not much beyond that to maintain its appearance.

Non-Toxic

Once set, epoxy coatings are generally non-toxic and are also germ/bacteria resistant. This makes them a perfect choice for medical facilities such as hospitals or early learning facilities such as a daycare.

Seamless

One of the best features of an epoxy coating is that it becomes almost like part of your building. Since it is poured rather than cut and tiled, it can fit every nook and cranny creating a perfectly covered area.

Corrosion Resistance

While we’ve discussed a bit about durability already, facilities that regularly deal with highly acidic materials will also greatly benefit from an epoxy coating. Following an install by an epoxy flooring contractor, the final coating has an estimated resistance to 98% sulfuric acid ( H₂SO₄) and 35% hydrochloric acid (HCl).

Attractive

Of course, no matter how durable your floors are – they still need to look good and luckily epoxy is a very flexible material. Popular design choices for epoxy floors are metallic, marble, flake and of course straight solid. If you’re looking for a specific color rather than style then you’re in luck as epoxy comes in a  wide variety of shades and colors and we can even customize it to your aesthetic needs!

Our Professional Epoxy Floor Installation Process

Did we manage to convince you of the benefits of epoxy flooring? Great! Then let’s talk a bit about how Expert Epoxy Flooring handles the installation process from start to finish.

Typically, our installation process which lasts around 2 to 4 weeks follows the below structure:

  • Preparation of the install site

  • Primer coating application

  • Epoxy coating application

  • Curing process

  • Sealer application

To start, our experienced team members will investigate and prepare the install site by ensuring no holes or cracks exist in the current concrete slabs and flooring. We provide repair services for these issues before applying an acid etch to make the concrete ready for the primer coat.

After the surface is ready, we then apply a primer coat to ensure no issues once the epoxy coatings are applied. Skipping this step will usually mean needing to come back and buff the surface which any epoxy flooring company knows is more trouble than it’s worth.

Once that primer coat dries, then we apply a single coat of epoxy that we also let dry for one day. Once dried, we then apply the second coat of epoxy and leave it for the curing process.

The curing process for epoxy takes around four to five days to fully complete. During that time, our team will need to rope off the area to avoid any foot or vehicle traffic before the epoxy is fully set to avoid needing to restart the process.

Once the epoxy is fully cured, we’ll review the surface for any issues then if all is good, apply the top coat also known as sealer. This sealer will ensure the surface looks great and has all the durability and other great features you’d expect from an epoxy flooring! If all goes well, this process takes about two to four weeks to complete.

FAQ's

Epoxy coating is a great option for all of these areas! Garages in particular benefit from epoxy’s resilience to chemicals such as gasoline and motor oil. Even better, you can clean these up super quickly thanks to the seal applied to all our epoxy floor installations.

While the initial investment for epoxy flooring definitely varies by the amount of square footage needing to be coated, our customers have all found that the long term benefits all offset this initial cost. To directly answer your question, epoxy flooring is generally not very expensive short term and when weighing its long term benefits is well worth the money.

Of course! Every building material on the market has both pros and cons to its use. While we have demonstrated its pros, a few of the issues we’ve heard from customers are that the floor gets a lot colder in the winter due to its heat resistant nature, walking on epoxy can be a little louder due to its high level of hardness, and if not treated for it, epoxy flooring can have issues with UV radiation.

If any of these are a concern for you, please don’t hesitate to give us a call and we can discuss it with you.
